Company Profile and Business Description for Brookfield Infrastructure Partners LP
Brookfield Infrastructure Partners L.P., incorporated on May 29, 2007, owns and operates utilities, transport, energy and communications infrastructure businesses in North and South America, Europe and Asia Pacific. The Company's segments include utilities, transport, energy, communications infrastructure and other.
The Company's utilities segment consists of regulated businesses, including regulated distribution (electricity and natural gas connections), electricity transmission and a regulated terminal (coal export terminal). As of December 31, 2016, regulated terminal, a metallurgical coal export terminal had approximately 85 million tons per annum (mtpa) of capacity. As of December 31, 2016, electricity transmission consisted of approximately 11,200 kilometers of transmission lines in North and South America with an additional 4,200 kilometers of greenfield electricity transmission under development in South America. As of December 31, 2016, regulated distribution consisted of approximately 2.8 million connections, predominantly electricity and natural gas, and approximately 450,000 installed smart meters. As of December 31, 2016, South American regulated distribution operations provided power to approximately 450,000 customers. As of December 31, 2016, regulated distribution operations had approximately 2.8 million electricity and natural gas connections in the United Kingdom and Colombia. In the United Kingdom, it consisted of approximately 2.5 million connections. In South America, its electricity distribution franchise area is in the Boyaca province of Colombia.
The Company's transport segment consists of open access systems that provide transportation, storage and handling services for freight, bulk commodities and passengers, for which it is paid an access fee. The transport segment includes rail operations, toll roads operations and port operations. As of December 31, 2016, it was a provider of rail network in south of Western Australia with approximately 5,500 kilometers of track and operator of approximately 4,800 kilometers of rail in South America. As of December 31, 2016, its toll roads operations included approximately 3,600 kilometers of motorways in Brazil, Chile, Peru and India. As of December 31, 2016, its port operations included 36 terminals in North America, United Kingdom, Australia and across Europe. As of December 31, 2016, its operations included gateway container terminals, a regional city port, and storage, handling and logistics operations at over 80 locations throughout Australia and New Zealand.
The Company's energy segment consists of systems that provide transportation, storage and distribution services. The Company's energy segment consists of transmission, distribution and storage operations and district energy operations. As of December 31, 2016, its transmission, distribution and storage operations included approximately 15,000 kilometers of natural gas transmission and pipeline systems in the United States, an unregulated natural gas and liquid propane gas (LPG) distribution operation in the United Kingdom, and natural gas storage capacity in the United States and Canada. Its natural gas transmission pipelines consist of systems in the United States, extending from the Gulf Coast, Texas and Oklahoma to Chicago.
As of December 31, 2016, the Company's North American district energy operations were located in seven cities and consisted of heating plants capable of delivering 2,870,000 pounds per hour of steam heating capacity, produced from six gas-fired steam plants and 261,000 tons of contracted cooling capacity, sourced from deep lake water systems and a range of other conventional chilling technologies. These operations provide steam heating in key markets, such as downtown Toronto, Ontario, in the medical district of New Orleans, Louisiana and in the central business district of Seattle, Washington. District cooling services are provided through a deep lake cooling system in Toronto and from mechanical chilling operations in key markets, such as Chicago, Illinois, Houston, Texas, and New Orleans. Its Australian district energy operations provide heating, cooling and energy solutions and distributed natural gas, water and wastewater services, in the states of Tasmania, New South Wales and Victoria. As of December 31, 2016, the natural gas network included over 800 kilometers of pipeline, bringing approximately 100 million cubic meters of natural gas to homes and businesses each year, with availability to provide this service to approximately 59,000 commercial and residential customers.
The Company's communications infrastructure segment provides services and infrastructure to the media broadcasting and telecommunication sectors. These services and access to infrastructure are contracted on a long-term basis with tariff escalation mechanisms. Its telecommunications customers pay upfront and recurring fees to lease space on its towers to host their equipment. As of December 31, 2016, the segment consisted of approximately 7,000 multi-purpose towers and active rooftop sites and 5,000 kilometers of fiber backbone located in France.
