Alpha-seeking PIZ searches for outperformance in developed markets outside the US based on a trend-following index from Dorsey Wright. The index picks about 100 stocks from thousands in its attempt to beat the market, which is why many names that dominate our benchmark aren't included in the basket. PIZ favors midcap stocks, which account for more than twice their benchmark weight, and the fund makes many sector bets that are liable to change quite a bit over time, though it does tend to consistently underweight financials. While PIZ may not succeed in delivering outperformance, it's also less volatile than some alpha-seekers. PIZ has decent liquidity, with sizeable daily volume and moderate spreads. Its liquid basket also allows for straightforward block execution. Holding costs may be an issue, however, as PIZ charges a high fee and tends to lag its index by even more than its expense ratio, which creates a headwind for investors seeking to get better-than-average returns.
