Volatility ETFs come to the rescue of investors and traders who may like to add another level of diversification to their portfolio, or for simply benefiting by taking short-term or intraday trading positions.
However, trading volatility can be tricky due to several reasons. First, it is difficult to understand and predict, and second, the securities available for trading volatility may come at a high cost and may have margin money requirements (like those for volatility based futures).
One can take the exchange traded fund (ETF) route to trade volatility at low prices.
Other related category of ETF investments that can be explored are the list of VIX ETFs, which aims to replicate VIX performance, and the list of Low Volatility ETFs, which aims to keep the fluctuations to minimum. Want to play along the VIX or the Volatility? See list of Volatility ETFs.
Additionally, one can also explore other popular classes of inverse ETFs which include Inverse S&P 500 ETFs and the much broader Inverse Equity ETFs for taking a shot at the inverse of the overall market.
Following is the list of all 31 exchange-traded funds that FKnol has in its database for ETFs which belong to the Volatility category:

How Volatility ETFs Work?

Boon for a few, and bane for the rest - Volatility in stock prices is not everyone's game. While a few active day traders may love high and wide swings in the stock prices, others may resent them completely. Volatility gives traders and investors a new class of asset to trade, and the frequent churns in price variations can be utilized by the active traders to make profits multiple times during the day.
Help is available in the form of volatility ETFs. Such volatility-based ETFs typically work by tracking the benchmark volatility index like VIX, and may take positions in appropriate VIX futures contracts. One can also find leveraged volatility ETFs which amplify the returns, and inverse volatility ETFs which offer inverse returns compared to the ones realized from the benchmark volatility index.
