How do VIX ETFs Work?

VIX ETFs may come in many flavors. The basic one is a simple tracker of the VIX index, that is - it simply replicates the value of the VIX index price movement. This is achieved by taking positions in the VIX index based futures and other instruments.
The other types of VIX ETFs are the leveraged ETFs, which aim to amplify the returns generated by the VIX index. For instance, if the VIX index value rises by 1.5 percent, the 2x leveraged VIX ETF will rise by 3 percent during the same time period. Similarly, the Inverse VIX 3x leveraged ETF will go down by -4.5 percent during the same period as it is set to generate the 'inverse' returns magnified by a factor of 3.
Most of such VIX ETFs generate returns as per their defined methodology by taking positions in VIX-based futures.
