List of Steel ETFs

Updated Nov 13, 2019
Steel has now gained the status of the leading basic building blocks of the modern day infrastructure. Hundreds of steel companies of varying sizes operate across the globe. Their activities involve producing various kinds of steels by mixing different proportions of iron, carbon and other materials, manufacturing variety of raw (unfinished), semi-finished and finished steel goods and artifacts of various shapes and sizes, and handling and serving the steel-based businesses. Owing to its popularity and high demand, steel has been among the leading metals as an investment choice. While individual investors can take stock-specific position in steel stocks, a long list of steel-based exchange-traded funds are also available in the market.
Such ETFs allow investors to take exposure to a big basket of steel stocks with a single holding by purchasing steel ETF units. Steel ETF is cost effective and offers ease of convenience rather than picking individual steel stocks. However, one should also note that the returns from steel ETFs are also a mixed average of all the constituent stocks that are held by the ETF. If the price of a few steel stocks in the ETF portfolio go up, there will be a few whose prices will go down, leading to average returns from the sector-specific ETF. Another disadvantage with steel ETFs is that they are sector-focused only, rather than diversified. It is therefore recommended that investors who truly believe in overall performance of the steel sector should invest in steel sector ETFs.
