List of Softs ETFs

Updated Dec 5, 2019
Soft commodities, or simple called as softs, are agriculture and farm produce that include cocoa, corn, coffee, sugar, soybean, wheat, fruits like oranges and even livestock. In general, anything which is grown, instead of being mined from the earth, is called a soft produce or a soft commodity. Investors often like to explore new avenues of investments and the segment of softs has gained popularity as an investment class. A good number of financial products are available in the market which allow exposure for trading and investing in individual soft commodities, or in a mixed basket of softs. For instance, advanced and complex financial products like futures and options are available for trading on products like coffee, orange and wheat. Similarly, there are mutual funds which allow exposure to such agriculture produce as an asset category. Investors also have an option to buy stocks of the companies which are in the business of soft commodities. Owing to the increasing popularity of soft commodities for investments, many asset management companies and fund houses have launched softs-based exchange-traded funds (ETF).

How Softs ETFs Work?

Working like a mutual fund, these softs ETF invest the money of the investor in stocks of companies which are deriving their business from soft commodity segment, or they directly invest in the physical produce, or they may take positions in futures (and options) contracts. A few may also invest in softs-based mutual funds and other related investments. Overall, the softs ETFs allow investors an easy way to invest their money in their choice of a particular soft commodity, or in a mixed bag of multiple soft commodities.
Soft commodity ETFs are a special subset of the larger Agriculture ETFs (List), which allow exposure to a larger basket of agro-products. Investors should note that such investments have high dependence on seasonal factors like weather, and may be subject to high expense ratio depending upon several factors like which products the ETF is investing into, the global reach of investments and associated cost of operations like purchasing and storing physical soft commodities. One can also explore the List of Natural Resources ETFs as an associated investment class.
