These precious metal ETFs work in mutiple ways, and it is important for investors to understand each of their themes. First type of precious metal ETFs work by simply selecting a group of companies which are in the business of exploration, mining, extraction, development, production and even restoration of instruments and jewels using the precious metals like gold, silver and platinum. These kind of precious metal ETFs invest in the stocks of such companies, which can be selected by the ETF fund manager either on the basis of those companies being included in a particular precious metal stock market index, or the fund managers may actively select such companies based on their own defined investment objectives. The second type of precious metal ETFs are the ones which take a position in one or more derivatives contracts based on the precious metals, and attempt to generate returns through the price movements that get reflected in the derivatives contracts of such metals. Typical financial instruments that are used for such precious metal ETF investments are the futures contracts on gold, silver or platinum. The third kind of precious metal ETFs are the ones which directly purchase the physical metal and store it safely in a certified vault under the purview of a custodian. As the demand and supply of the ETF units move, the fund manager buys and sells the appropriate amount of metal.
