By standard definition, natural gas, is a gaseous mix of naturally generated hydrocarbon which comprises mainly of gases like methane. However, other common gases may also be included in varying quantities. They include nitrogen, helium, hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, or higher alkanes. There are actively managed natural gas ETFs where the ETF fund manager will do their own research and decision making, and invest in stocks of natural gas companies. There are the passively managed natural gas ETFs which follow a particular natural gas index, and replicate the portfolio of the constituents of the index in the given proportion. The leveraged ETFs work by taking positions in future, options and other energy related derivatives - to magnify the returns generated from the natural gas index by a given factor.
