Leveraged Energy exchange-traded funds (ETF) are those ETFs which take structured trading positions in futures, forwards and other derivative instruments of the energy sector instruments. As the name suggests, these leveraged energy ETFs are structured to generate a 'leveraged' or 'magnified' form of returns, which is clearly indicated as a 'x' factor. Additionally, the returns generated may also be inverse of the underlying index, like if the index or asset goes up by 2.5%, the inverse energy ETF may return -2.5%, For instance, a '3x Inverse Crude Oil ETF' will usually generate -3% decline for every 1% increase in the price of crude oil, and that is indicated by the use of words '3x' and 'inverse' in the name of the ETF. How Leveraged Energy ETFs Work?
The Leveraged Energy ETFs use the investor's money to take trading positions in futures, forwards, and other suitable financial instruments of the various energy sector instruments. Owing to the mathematical model and methodology they follow, they manage to generate the returns which is a magnification of the given energy component. For instance, a '4x Natural Gas ETF' will generate four times the returns of the price changes in natural gas during a given period, while a '2Crude Oil ETF' will generate twice the returns of price changes in crude oil. Additionally, if the leveraged energy ETF is following an inverse methodology, then the returns generated will be in opposite direction of the price movement of the energy commodity.
