List of Inverse S&P 500 ETFs

Updated Sep 16, 2019
An inverse ETF provides returns which are opposite of the direction of the returns generated from the underlying benchmark index. For example, if there is an inverse ETF that is tracking the underlying S&P 500 index and the S&P 500 index goes up by 1.5 percent, then the inverse ETF will typically go down by the same amount - that is, it will generate a -1.5 percent return. Such inverse ETFs form important part of an investor's portfolio, as they allow for the important aspect of hedging or risk mitigation, as well as for diversification. Traders and investors who have a bearish view on the S&P 500 index but don't want to take a short position can attempt to benefit by purchasing ETF units in such inverse S&P 500 ETFs. In addition to standard inverse ETFs, there are leveraged inverse ETFs on S&P 500 which amplify the returns by the given factor. For example, a 3x inverse S&P 500 ETF will generate 3 percent positive return when the S&P 500 index goes down by 1 percent. (Also see, List of S&P 500 ETF.)
