How Inverse / Short Oil ETFs Work?

Since the name of the ETFs includes the word 'inverse' or 'short', it indicates that the returns generated will be inverse or opposite in direction. There are two kinds of inverse oil ETFs. The first ones track a particular oil-sector specific market index, and attempts to replicate its performance in terms of returns but opposite in direction of the movement of the oil market index. For example, if the oil index goes up by +2.5 percent, the inverse ETF is expected to go down by -2.5 percent during the same period.
Other inverse oil ETFs may simply track a particular type of oil's price, like those of Brent crude oil or those of WTI crude oil, and provide returns which are opposite in direction of the moves of those oil prices. For example, an inverse oil ETF tracking Brent crude oil will generate +1.5 percent returns if the Brent oil prices go down by -1.5 percent.
A few inverse oil ETFs also add a 'leverage factor' to amplify the returns. If the leverage factor is '3x' and the underlying oil price or underlying index value goes down by -1 percent, then the ETF value will go up by +3 percent - that is, opposite in direction and multiple of the leverage factor.
