List of Hedge Fund ETFs

Updated Sep 16, 2019
Direct investments in hedge funds are not for the average Joe investor, as hedge funds are complex financial securities which employ advance strategies which come with high risk. On one hand, hedge funds can provide very high returns, and on the other they risk losing a significant portion of invested capital which may not be suitable for the common investors. Additionally, hedge fund investments may also come at high cost in the form of high expense ratio and administrative charges.
Hedge Fund ETFs (exchange traded funds) come to the rescue. While they may not reduce the risk that comes with direct investments in hedge funds, they may spread the investors capital across multiple hedge funds thereby reducing the dependence on one of the hedge funds and offer benefit of diversification. Additionally, the hedge fund ETFs come at a comparatively lower cost of investment in the form of lower expense ratio.
Such hedge fund ETFs employ various strategies used by hedge funds. They include taking long/short positions in stocks as well as alternative assets, going market neutral, taking managed futures positions, or simply replicating a particular hedge fund strategy. Additionally, there are private ETFs that put sophisticated strategies to implementation. Hedge fund ETFs belong to the class of Alternative ETFs. (For more details, see List of Alternatives ETFs.)
