In addition to traditional stocks and equity based ETFs, such agricultural ETFs allow an investor another stream of diversification. While various agricultural commodities can be easily traded using futures and options, they come at a high cost as well as a high risk. Agriculture ETFs allow an easy way to invest in the select agriculture produce, as well as in the basket of desired agriculture commodities, as they can be invested or traded at a comparatively lower cost (expense ratio). Agri ETFs may directly invest in physical commodities, or they may invest in agri-commodity futures using the capital collected from the ETF investors. However, one must note that the agriculture produce and hence its business has a high dependence on the weather.
