The world's leading stock market index, the S&P 500 or simply called S&P, is one of the most popular indexes that is actively followed all across the globe for keeping track of the broader-level U.S. stock market. Constituting around 500 different listed companies that actively trade on the leading stock exchanges like NASDAQ and NYSE, S&P 500 is considered to be the best measure of large-cap American equities market. More than $10 trillion worth of financial securities - like mutual funds, index funds, ETFs and several variants of derivatives - are linked to the popular index.
While the S&P 500 index represents a single number, it derives its value based on the market capitalization of more than 500 different companies. Since the index takes into account the top 500 companies as per their market capitalization, regular changes the index companies is required. Such changes are needed so that the stocks of the companies which are no longer in the top 500 can be replaced by the ones which have gained more market cap over a period. Another reason for changes to the index is to ensure all included company meet the set criteria (other than market cap limit). Usually, the constituent companies are checked for their eligibility to remain in the S&P 500 index once a quarter. Those which no longer remain in the top 500, or those which fail on eligibility measures, are removed, and new ones come in to take their place. There are additional criteria for the participant companies which must be met before the company gets included in the benchmark index.
