Owens Corning, incorporated on July 21, 2006, is engaged in the business of composite and building materials systems, delivering a range of products and services. The Company's products range from glass fiber used to reinforce composite materials for transportation, electronics, marine, infrastructure, wind-energy and other markets to insulation and roofing for residential, commercial and industrial applications. The Company's segments include Composites, Insulation and Roofing.
As of December 31, 2016, the Company offered glass fiber materials for use in over 40,000 end-use applications within five primary markets: building and construction, transportation, consumer, industrial, and power and energy. Its end-use applications include pipe, roofing shingles, sporting goods, consumer electronics, telecommunications cables, boats, aviation, defense, automotive, industrial containers and wind-energy. The Company primarily sells its products directly to parts molders and fabricators. Within the building and construction market, the Composites segment sells glass fiber and/or glass mat directly to a small number of shingle manufacturers. Its Composites segment includes vertically integrated downstream activities. The Company manufactures, fabricates and sells glass reinforcements in the form of fiber. Glass reinforcement materials are also used downstream by the Composites segment to manufacture and sell glass fiber products in the form of fabrics, non-wovens and other specialized products. The Composites segment is engaged in the production of glass fiber reinforcement materials.
The Company competes with China Jushi Group Co., Ltd., Chongqing Polycom International Corporation Ltd, Johns Manville, Nippon Electric Glass Co. Ltd., PPG Industries and Taishan Glass Fiber Co., Ltd.
The Company's insulating products include thermal and acoustical batts, loosefill insulation, foam sheathing and accessories, and these are sold under brand names, such as Owens Corning PINK FIBERGLAS Insulation. Its Insulation segment also manufactures and sells glass fiber pipe insulation, duct media, bonded and granulated mineral fiber insulation and foam insulation used in above- and below-grade construction applications. It sells insulation products primarily to insulation installers, home centers, lumberyards, retailers and distributors in the United States and Canada. The insulation segment includes a portfolio with a geographic mix of the United States, Canada, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America, a market mix of residential, commercial, industrial and other markets, and a channel mix of retail, contractor and distribution.
The Company competes with CertainTeed Corporation, Dow Chemical, Johns Manville and Knauf Insulation.
The primary products in the Roofing segment are laminate and strip asphalt roofing shingles. Its other products include oxidized asphalt, roofing components and synthetic packaging materials. It sells shingles and roofing components primarily through home centers, lumberyards, retailers, distributors and contractors in the United States. Its synthetic packaging materials are used primarily in the construction industry for lumber and metal packaging. It has manufacturing facilities that process asphalt for use in the roofing shingles manufacturing process. In addition, the Company sells asphalt to other shingle manufacturers, to roofing contractors for built-up roofing asphalt systems and to manufacturers in a variety of other industries, including automotive, chemical, rubber and construction. Asphalt input costs and third-party asphalt sales prices are correlated to crude oil prices.
