Company Profile and Business Description for AngloGold Ashanti

AngloGold Ashanti Limited (AngloGold Ashanti), incorporated on May 29, 1944, is a gold mining company. The Company's business activities span the spectrum of the mining value chain. Its main product is gold. Its portfolio includes over 17 mines in approximately nine countries. The Company also produces silver, uranium and sulfuric acid as by-products. The Company operates through four segments: South Africa, Continental Africa, Australasia and Americas.

South Africa

The Company's South African operations comprise over four mines and surface production facilities, which include the Vaal River operations, including Kopanang and Moab Khotsong; The West Wits operations, including Mponeng and TauTona, and surface operations. The Vaal River and West Wits operations extract gold from various low-grade stockpiles where there is more metallurgical capacity than reef mined. Uranium is produced as a by-product at Vaal River South Uranium Plant. In addition, backfill product is produced and used as support in mining operations. Kopanang is an underground operation located in the Free State province, approximately 170 kilometers southwest of Johannesburg and approximately 10 kilometers southeast of the town of Orkney on a lease area of over 35 square kilometers.

The Moab Khotsong is an underground mine in South Africa, which is situated near Orkney, Klerksdorp and Viljoenskroon, approximately 180 kilometers southwest of Johannesburg. The surface operations consist of Hard Rock Surface Sources and Mine Waste Solutions (MWS). The Hard Rock Surface Sources includes the rail transport infrastructure, the Vaal River and West Wits Laboratories and tailings management facilities. The MWS is a gold and uranium tailings recovery operation located in the western portion of the Witwatersrand Basin, approximately 160 kilometers from Johannesburg. MWS consists of approximately 14 tailings dams, which cover an area of approximately 1,100 hectares. The MWS gold plants have treat tailings of over 1.93 million tons per month. The uranium plant has a design capacity of approximately 100,000 tons per month. The tailings dams consist of tailings material originated from the processing of underground ore from the Buffelsfontein Gold Mine (BGM) and Stilfontein Gold Mine (SGM).

The West Wits operations, Mponeng and TauTona, are situated southwest of Johannesburg, on the border between Gauteng and North West Province. Mponeng is located between the towns of Carletonville and Fochville on the border between Gauteng and the North West Province, southwest of Johannesburg. The operation extracts the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR) at depths between 2,800 meters and 3,400 meters through sequential-grid mining. The Mponeng lease area is constrained to the north by the TauTona mine, to the east by Gold Fields' Driefontein mine and to the west by Harmony's Kusasalethu mine. Mponeng comprises a twin-shaft system housing over two surface shafts and approximately two sub-shafts. The plant has a monthly capacity of approximately 170,000 tons. TauTona lies on the West Wits Line, south of Carletonville in Gauteng, over 70 kilometers southwest of Johannesburg. Mining takes place at depths of between 2,000 meters and 3,640 meters. It processes TauTona and Mponeng reef material through the Mponeng Gold Plant. The Savuka Gold Plant has a monthly capacity of approximately 165,000 tons, which processes material from the Mponeng low-grade stockpile.

Continental Africa

The Company has operations in Continental Africa in locations, including Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Guinea, Mali and Tanzania. Iduapriem, a subsidiary of the Company, comprises the Iduapriem and Teberebie properties on a 105 square kilometer concession. The mine is situated in the western region of Ghana, approximately 85 kilometers north of the coastal city of Takoradi and over eight kilometers southwest of Tarkwa. Iduapriem is an open-pit mine and its processing facilities include a Carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant. Obuasi, a subsidiary of the Company is located in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, approximately 320 kilometers north-west of the capital Accra and approximately 60 kilometers south of Kumasi. Mining operations are primarily underground, to a depth of approximately 1.5 kilometers. The gold deposits at Obuasi are part of a gold belt of Proterozoic (Birimian) volcano-sedimentary and igneous formations, which extend for a distance of approximately 300 kilometers in a north-east/south-west trend in south-western Ghana. Obuasi mineralization is shear-zone related and there are approximately three main structural trends hosting gold mineralization, such as the Obuasi trend, the Gyabunsu trend and the Binsere trend. Siguiri, a multiple open-pit oxide gold mine is the Company's operation in the Republic of Guinea. It is located in the district of Siguiri. The mine is located approximately 520 kilometers north-northeast of Conakry, approximately 25 kilometers northwest of the town of Siguiri and over 190 kilometers southeast of the Malian capital Bamako, near the Mali boarder. On surface, Siguiri's gold processing plant treats approximately 998,000 tons per month.

The Company has interests in various operations in Mali, such as Sadiola, Yatela and Morila. It manages Sadiola and Yatela. The Morila mine is situated approximately 280 kilometers southeast of Bamako, the capital of Mali. The operation treats low-grade stockpiles while the plant, which incorporates a conventional carbon-in-leach (CIL) process. The Sadiola mine is situated in western Mali, approximately 77 kilometers to the south of the regional capital of Kayes and approximately 440 kilometers north-west of the capital city of Bamako. The processing plant has a capability of process oxide and sulfide material.

Australasia

The Australasia segment includes the operations in Australia. It consists of Sunrise Dam and Tropicana. The Sunrise Dam Gold Mine is located approximately 220 kilometers northeast of Kalgoorlie and approximately 55 kilometers south of Laverton in Western Australia. The ore is treated through conventional gravity and CIL processing plant with a capacity of approximately 2.5 million tons (Mt) per annum. The Tropicana Gold Mine is located approximately 200 kilometers east of Sunrise Dam and approximately 330 kilometers east-northeast of Kalgoorlie. The Tropicana joint venture (JV) includes approximately 2,863 square kilometers of tenure in the prospective Tropicana belt.
