Top Companies By Market Value

Updated Jul 3, 2019
The valuation of a company keep changing with time. For listed companies whose shares actively trade on the stock exchanges, the value of the company changes every second with the change in its share price. Despite all the wide swings which may be observed in the stock price, the companies having top notch valuations always remain in the limelight.
A company which may have recently achieved high valuation - say like becoming worth $1 trillion - may spark significant interest among the investors' community with regards to whether it is really worth the value? Questions linger on about potential for the future - is there more upside left, or the stock price has hit the peak and may now revert. In August 2018, Apple Inc. (AAPL) achieved the coveted status of being the first company to reach a trillion-dollar valuation. However, by the end of the year, the stock price of Apple declined considerably, and the company was worth around $760 billion. Another technology giant Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) surpassed Apple marginally to become the most valuable company by the end of 2018.
Essentially, the changes in valuations keep the list of the most valued companies a dynamic one. For instance, energy companies, like those in the oil and gas sector, used to remain top contenders in the list of most valued companies during the 1980s and 1990s. As of this decade, the technology company are ruling the top rungs. Amid significant moves in the list, the fortunes of the shareholders, especially the promoters and other large investors, also keeps changing. Mark Zuckerberg, the co-founder of Facebook Inc. (FB), was once among the world's top riches. However, with the social media company losing big amid data security scandals and other problems, Facebook no longer appears in the list of most valued companies any more, and Zuckerberg has also moved down in the list of riches.
