List of Precious Metals ETFs

Updated Mar 8, 2019
For centuries, people from all walks of life have trusted their hard earned money to precious metals which mainly include gold and silver, though platinum and palladium have also gained prominence over the last few decades. A wide variety of exchange-traded funds (ETF) are available which are based on one or more precious metals, and they serve an excellent, efficient and low-cost medium for common investors to take a shot at the precious metal investments.

How Precious Metal ETFs Work

These precious metal ETFs work in mutiple ways, and it is important for investors to understand each of their themes.
First type of precious metal ETFs work by simply selecting a group of companies which are in the business of exploration, mining, extraction, development, production and even restoration of instruments and jewels using the precious metals like gold, silver and platinum. These kind of precious metal ETFs invest in the stocks of such companies, which can be selected by the ETF fund manager either on the basis of those companies being included in a particular precious metal stock market index, or the fund managers may actively select such companies based on their own defined investment objectives.
The second type of precious metal ETFs are the ones which take a position in one or more derivatives contracts based on the precious metals, and attempt to generate returns through the price movements that get reflected in the derivatives contracts of such metals. Typical financial instruments that are used for such precious metal ETF investments are the futures contracts on gold, silver or platinum.
The third kind of precious metal ETFs are the ones which directly purchase the physical metal and store it safely in a certified vault under the purview of a custodian. As the demand and supply of the ETF units move, the fund manager buys and sells the appropriate amount of metal.
While one can find individual precious metal ETFs, like Gold ETFs, Silver ETFs and Platinum ETFs, the precious metal ETFs are a superset of these individual metal-specific ETFs which give investors are larger, diversified set of investments that can span across multiple precious metals.
The following list includes metal-specific ETFs as well as the ones which offer a combined investment across multiple precious metals. One can also explore the leveraged ETFs on such precious metal which make it possible to amplify the returns (both profits and losses) multiple times by a given factor, and there are inverse ETFs that can generate inverse returns. One must clearly check the working of the precious metal ETFs and their constituent holdings before making a selection. Expense ratio is another measure to keep an eye on, as the cost associated with investing in such ETFs may vary widely.
